HOW DO I FIND THESE ARTICLES?
a beginning tutorial to finding journal articles using electronic subscription services

The electronic subscriptions services allow the library to receive scholarly journals as well as other popular journals in an electronic format (EBSCO is one of these subscription services). As with any other use of sources, be sure that your sources are reliable scholarly journals (journals published by professionals in a field instead of those intended for a mass readership such as Time Magazine). There are other subscriptions services offered by the library on the Indexes and Abstracts page. Try this tutorial to get comfortable using EBSCO, and then try using the services for whichever electronic subscription service works best for your topic or course.

Follow the directions below to access an article on EBSCO
(you may want to open up new window while keeping this window with the directions open so that you can look at both windows simultaneously)

1. From the Prescott Memorial Library Homepage:

  • Click on the link “Indexes and Abstracts” under the heading “Electronic Resources”

2. From the Prescott Memorial Library Indexes and Abstracts page:

  • Scroll down to EBSCOhost Web – All Databases
  • Click on the link “EBSCOhost Web – All Databases"

3. From the EBSCOhost page:

  • Click on the link called “Academic Search Premier

4. On the next EBSCO Academic Search Premier page:

  • Click on the blue tab for “Advanced Search

5. On the Advanced Search page:

Enter the name of the author or other search terms (topics or keywords in a topic) in the text field box after the word “Find”

Change the setting on the next text field box after the word “in” to “AU Author" for author searches or to "Default Fields" for keyword searches

Click on Search

Search Tips

Other Search Tips:

If you use "and," the program will search for both entries. If you use "or" the program will pick up entries that contain one term or the other in the selected fields.

Be sure to carefully plan how to ender your keywords. For instance, if you are looking up a the play Hamlet, you would need to try the terms "hamlet," and "shakespeare" both in your search to narrow down on the play Hamlet but to exclude references to small villages.

In addition, sometimes you need to try several key words before you hit the one that give the information you want. If you are looking up reviews written of a recent movie, don't forget to use the word "film" as well in your searching. Be sure to check a search using the director's name in addition to the title of the film.

6. Once the page with the list of articles appears, you may want to click on the link called "Scholarly Journals" to filter out all other materials which may not be appropriate for your assignment. Scroll down until you find the one you want.

Click on the links for either the HTML or PDF versions of this article

7. Print out and read your article
